Woke up to an early morning thunder storm. For a brief moment, I thought the noises I had heard was the trash truck making its rounds ahead of schedule and I was about to leap out of bed and dash out the back door in my bathrobe to wheel our garbage can to the curb in the alley.
Since I was up and not able to fall back asleep, I decided to grab my Bible and sit out on our balcony. As I blew the dust off this too-often-neglected Book and opened up a new study on worship that I found yesterday while out shopping, I listened to the booms in the distance as they grew louder…closer….it was as if the heavens themselves were declaring the glory of God or maybe the Angels had started a bowling league.
The lightning lit up the clouds in the sky above. Flash after brilliant flash. I felt like I was a movie star at a red carpet event. Perhaps there was a heavenly paparazzo taking a picture of me for God to keep in His wallet.
While I was sitting there taking it all in and enjoying this moment of rare solitude in holy communion before the inevitable craziness of the day sprung upon me, I was joined on the deck by my daughter, Toby. She was cradling one of her furry critters in her arms.
“Mom, I think Baloo is afraid of the thunder.”
I took the shivering fuzzy thing from her and tucked it into my robe, nestling it into that cozy spot right under my chin and held the creature close to my chest. I whispered softly into my pajamas,
“It’s ok, little darlin’, you are safe with me.”
Toby went back inside and grabbed her other bunny and we both sat out there in the rocking chairs all snuggled under some blankets and rocked those rabbits as we comforted them while watching the storm pass by.
This precious moment reminded me of a verse in Psalms
“He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge. His faithfulness is body armor and shield.”
Psalms 91:4 TLV
I hope I remember this the next time I’m tempted to be afraid. I am God’s little snuggle bunny and He will keep me safe.
