I didn’t die today!

Ever have one of those life-flashing-before-your-very-eyes moments? I had one this afternoon.

The fifteen minute drive to my children’s school is a two lane country road with a few blind turns and twists. The road was a little slick today from an earlier deluge.

As I was cruising along I turned up the radio to sing along to an old Stevie Wonder song: “?…You can feel it alllll oh-oh-over, you can feel it allll over, people…?”

Approaching one of the blind sharp curves, I pressed my brakes slightly and turned my steering wheel half a turn – gently to the right. It was then that I met almost face to face with a huge construction truck coming straight at me halfway over into my lane.

Perhaps the driver underestimated his speed while making the turn or maybe we both had taken the curve a little too fast. One thing’s for sure, neither one of us saw the other coming. Surprise!

I’m amazed at the amount of thoughts one is capable of thinking in a short nano-second. “I’m gonna die today….or at least be severely disfigured. What about the dog?” (Ok, so the dog was in the car with me….I’m sure I would’ve thought of my children or husband too if a nano-second was a half-nano-second longer.)

I braked hard and pulled to the right as the front end of our vehicles narrowly missed each other by a thread and he glided past me. I sat there stopped in the road – completely in shock – turned off the radio and tried to slow down the pounding in my chest.

“What the heck just happened? How am I still here? Why didn’t I hear a loud crash noise or feel an impact alllll overr, people? ?”
The driver of the truck who had already driven several yards away from me stopped his truck, put it in reverse and backed up to the curve where I had paused. He opened the large door and climbed down out of the vehicle and walked towards me. I got out of mine too.

Both of us looking at each other in awe that we didn’t just smash into smithereens. As we stood there staring, he broke the silence and exclaimed, “Praise God!” And I replied, “He certainly was looking out for us, wasn’t He? Praise God, indeed!”

He apologized for what could’ve been. He said he didn’t even see me coming. I re-assured him that I was ok…relieved…and that there was no sign of damage or collision.

He backed up in disbelief and exclaimed, “Wow! Let’s just take this moment to praise God, shall we?!”

So there we stood in the middle of the road, having an impromptu bonding moment as we praised our Maker for protecting us.

He introduced himself and asked where I was from. We exchanged “God bless yous” and then went our separate ways…forever changed by this unplanned happenstance; this Divine intervention.

Both eternally grateful to go back to our ordinary, unscathed lives having narrowly missed the opportunity to have our fifteen seconds of fame on the 5 o’clock news.
